Our History

Fairness is in
our nature.

A look at our history reveals when we started advocating for fair coffee: always. We were even founded on this principle.

We had the completely new ambition to produce fair coffee at a time when Fairtrade was only known by a few people.

Since then, our goal has been, as Fairtrade pioneers, not only to achieve the highest coffee quality but also to involve the producers in the success and offer them new perspectives.

With TransFair Coffee and the later brand Café Intención, Albert Darboven continues the story of his family business over 100 years later – in line with founder J.J. Darboven’s vision, with particular innovation and pioneering spirit.

Since then, we have done a lot: we’ve developed new products, found new distribution channels, and most importantly, strengthened our commitment in the growing regions. We’ve also long been aware of the environmental impact of our production and offer almost all our products in organic quality.

But one thing has remained the same to this day: We want to lead the way in making the world of coffee fairer and more sustainable. We are convinced of this path and want to encourage as many allies as possible to follow suit with their own commitment.

The Beginnings

During his stays in Central America, Albert Darboven personally meets many producers in coffee-growing regions. He decides to involve them more in the business success and improve their living conditions. Even at that time, he sees socially and ecologically sustainable actions not only as a prerequisite for long-term success but also as an obligation of a good entrepreneur.

The First TransFair Coffee

The non-profit organization TransFair e. V. is founded and introduces the TransFair label for fairly traded products. J.J. Darboven advocates for the organization from the beginning and brings the first certified TransFair coffee to German supermarkets later that same year.

The Creation of Café Intención

We change our name from TransFair Coffee to Café Intención. Step by step, we increase our recognition in Germany and inspire more companies to switch to fair-trade coffee.

The Path into Gastronomy

We introduce many of our products into the gastronomy sector. This allows us to reach even more people with our Fairtrade coffee and turn them into allies of our mission.

Fairtrade Award and Organic Seal

J.J. Darboven becomes the first company ever to receive the Fairtrade Award in recognition of its long-standing commitment to Fairtrade. In the same year, we also receive the Organic Seal.

Kick-off for Fair Cocoa

We don't want to stop with coffee alone, as cocoa producers are still often underpaid. So, with Cacaó Intención, we now bring fair and sustainable cocoa to the supermarket.

The Premiere of Country Coffees

For the first time, we offer pure country coffee: a single-origin selection of beans from the best growing regions – our Selección Peru and Selección Honduras, of course in organic quality.

Today and Tomorrow

We are proud to offer a Café Intención for every taste and preparation method today – whether in the supermarket, at the local café, or in our online shop. Even though we have already achieved so much, we still don’t see ourselves at the finish line. We continue to work with energy to create more justice so that fair and sustainable coffee doesn't remain the exception, but one day becomes the standard.
